- Perform inspections before the operations, in order to calculate capacities of the crane and weight, so as to prepare them for hoisting and rigging.

- Compulsion of Tower crane operator trade certification is made available in and restricted to Manitoba, Ontario and Alberta and is voluntary in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Labrador and Newfoundland
- Trade certification is also available as the hoist operator of hydraulic crane but this is a voluntary requirement for British Columbia and Saskatchewan
- Another compulsory certification in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba is Mobile crane operator trade certification, while this is voluntary in Northwest Territories and Nunavut
- Provincial license may be required by operators of the mobile cranes to drive these cranes publicly on roads
- Some employers may demand Internal company certification to serve as their crane operator
- A person must have experience of around 2-4 years; actual number of years of experience to apply under this occupation is dependent on many factors such as whether the applicant is married and his English language skills.
