Canada is a multicultural, multi-ethnic society that welcomes immigrants from across the globe. People from across the continents have made Canada their home. Not surprisingly, people from the south-Asian countries, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have also migrated to different parts of the country.
The Government of Canada is committed to reaching out to Canadians and newcomers and is developing lasting relationships with ethnic and religious communities in Canada. It encourages these communities to participate fully in society by enhancing their level of economic, social, and cultural integration. Canada’s Multiculturalism Program draws its mandate from the Canadian Multiculturalism Act (1988).
Black History Month is celebrated every year in February. During the Black History Month, Canadians take part in events that honour the legacy of black Canadians, past and present. Asian Heritage Month is celebrated in May. Asian Heritage Month is dedicated to acknowledging the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and their contributions to Canada.
National Video Competition is an innovative educational program that gives youth a chance to express their feelings about eliminating racism through video. Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Program Through the Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Program, funding will be provided to initiatives that relate to the Program objectives of building an integrated, socially cohesive society; improving the responsiveness of institutions to the needs of a diverse population; and actively engaging in discussions on multiculturalism and diversity at the international level.
