Investment immigration

Residency or Citizenship in Return for a Qualifying Investment

Investment immigration programs let you and your family obtain residency or citizenship in another country by making an approved investment there. Governments use these programs to attract capital into real estate, funds, businesses and national development projects. In return, applicants receive a status that can bring easier travel, the right to live and work abroad, access to international banking and education, and, in some programs, a second passport.

There are two kinds of program, and the difference matters:

Residency by investment grants a residence permit. You can live, work and study in the country, and in many cases apply for permanent residency or citizenship after a set number of years. Portugal, Cyprus, Italy, Malta, Panama, Denmark, Finland and the U.S. EB-5 program work this way.

Citizenship by investment grants a passport directly, usually within months and without a requirement to live in the country. St. Kitts & Nevis, Dominica, Antigua & Barbuda, Saint Lucia, Vanuatu and Türkiye work this way.

Canreach Global helps you understand each option, confirm your eligibility, prepare a complete application and deal with the government on your behalf.

Amounts and timelines are indicative, change with each country's policy and each applicant's circumstances, and remain subject to government due diligence. A second passport

Citizenship by Investment Programs

A second citizenship gives you a passport, not just a permit. These programs suit families who want wider travel access, a safe fallback residence and the freedom to hold citizenship without living in the country. Travel privileges are set by each destination country rather than by the program. Visa-free and visa-on-arrival travel privileges are based on information available as of September 2026 and are subject to change.

Residency programs

Residency by Investment in Europe and Panama

Residency programs give you the right to live, work and study in the country, and in several cases a path toward permanent residency and, over time, citizenship as a separate later application. Portugal, Cyprus, Italy and Malta reward a qualifying investment, Panama grants permanent residence through qualifying property, and Denmark and Finland welcome founders who will build a business there.

United States

U.S. EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa

The EB-5 program is a pathway to U.S. permanent residency for investors who put capital into a job-creating American business. Most applicants invest through a government-designated regional centre project that pools investments and manages the job-creation requirement.

  • Minimum investment of USD 800,000 in a qualifying targeted employment area or infrastructure project, or USD 1,050,000 for standard investments, subject to current USCIS requirements
  • Permanent residence for you, your spouse and unmarried children under 21, granted first on a conditional basis
  • Investors in rural, high-unemployment and infrastructure projects may qualify for set-aside visa categories
  • Processing is project and case by case, so our team gives you a realistic estimate for your file before you commit
  • Project details are published only after Canreach Global has completed its internal verification and U.S. legal compliance review, and are shared with you during your consultation in the meantime

Questions

Investment Immigration Questions, Answered

What is the difference between residency by investment and citizenship by investment?
Residency by investment gives you a residence permit to live, work and study in a country, with a path to permanent residency or citizenship over time as a separate later application. Citizenship by investment grants a passport directly, usually within months, and generally has no requirement to live in the country.
Can my family be included in one application?
Most programs include your spouse and dependent children, and several include dependent parents or grandparents. The comparison table above shows who each program covers, and our team will confirm the details for your family at your assessment.
Do I need to live in the country?
Citizenship by investment programs generally have no residency requirement. Türkiye and Vanuatu set no physical residency requirement at all, while Antigua & Barbuda asks for at least five days in the country within the first five years. Residency programs vary: Portugal asks for seven days in the first year and fourteen days in each subsequent two-year period, Denmark and Finland expect you to live there and actively run your business, and U.S. permanent residents are expected to make the United States their home.
Is the investment refundable?
It depends on the route. Government fund contributions are donations and are not returned. Real estate, fund and business investments can usually be sold after a mandatory holding period, typically three to seven years, subject to market conditions. Türkiye sets a three-year holding period, Saint Lucia five years and St. Kitts & Nevis seven years on their real estate routes.
How long does the process take?
Timelines are indicative and vary with government due diligence, documentation and individual circumstances. In the Caribbean, St. Kitts & Nevis runs approximately four to six months, Dominica three to six months, Antigua & Barbuda nine to ten months and Saint Lucia nine to twelve months. Vanuatu is the fastest at forty five to sixty days, and Türkiye is confirmed case by case. In Europe, Cyprus is indicatively two to four months, Italy three to four months, Malta six to eight months and Portugal twelve to twenty four months. Denmark is two months after the business idea is approved, extended to up to four months if further documentation is requested, and Finland is approximately two weeks for the Migri decision under its fast-track service, with the Business Finland assessment on top. Panama and the U.S. EB-5 program are confirmed project and case by case.
How is my tax situation affected?
Obtaining residency or citizenship does not automatically change where you pay tax. Tax treatment depends on your personal circumstances and where you are tax resident. Canreach will point you to qualified tax advisors before you commit to any program.
Are these programs available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents?
Yes. Many Canreach Global clients are Canadians who want a second citizenship, a European base or U.S. permanent residence. Canada permits dual citizenship, so obtaining a second passport does not affect your Canadian status.
